Three weeks ago, Jena had walked into the door and saw her mother pretending to read as she waited for Jena to come home from a pep-rally. She knew she was in trouble. She was late, after swearing she wouldn’t be. Her mother still pretended to read and didn’t look up.

Jena sighed and sat next to her mother. Her mother was always grounding her or lecturing her for doing basic teenage things. Jena was sick of it. She just wanted to hang out with her friends for the last year of high school.

Then, Jena rolled her eyes and laughed.

Jena couldn’t stop herself. She had to say something.

Jena stormed off to the bathroom, opened the door, and got into the shower. She couldn’t believe her mother was being so unreasonable. All of the other kids had curfews that stretched past 9 o clock. So, why couldn’t Jena? It didn’t make any sense.

She sadly washed the face paint from her face. It was the last time she’d spoken to her mother before getting kidnapped. She wished she could talk to her now because she was pretty sure her mother knew exactly why she was here.

Jena turned around. She stared at the naked woman growling at her. Jena had just finished a session at what the girls nicknamed ‘the gym.’ She felt like she had semen coming from out of every crevice of her body so she was thankful it was shower time. Jena noticed that none of the women seemed to be pregnant, even though this was said to be a breeding program. She wondered if they had birth control in the food or something like that. Her mother’s voice rang in her head. This place is a palace compared to the places you could end up. She would do anything for a 6 o clock curfew and her own bed right now.

The woman sucked her teeth. Jena knew she was in trouble.

Then, the woman shoved Jena.

The woman punched Jena in the face. The punch landed directly onto Jena’s jaw. She watched as her own blood hit the floor.

Jena doubled over in pain, but the woman kept coming. She was beginning to see spots as the other women began to cheer or scream in fear.

Jena could feel her eyes begin to swell as the pain increased. She couldn’t breathe as the woman punched her hard in the ribs. Finally, a nurse heard the noise and came in.

The nurse ran up the shoved the woman out of the way as Jena fell. He picked up a crumpled Jena from the floor. She was barely conscious as she felt herself be lifted gently into his arms.

Jena didn’t remember when the nurse put her clothes back on, and she didn’t remember the walk down the hallway.

The nurse laid her gently on her cell bed. She was surprised at how soft and cool the blankets felt on her bruised face. She could still feel the bruises forming around her eyes.

The nurse walked away, and Jena realized it was the kindest thing anyone had done for her since she’d gotten here.

When Jena woke up, all the other girls were back in their cells. Gillian was looking down at her. Jena stood up and walked toward the edge of her cell to talk to her.

Jena knew what it was to want to rage out against someone. She couldn’t be too sure she wouldn’t end up doing the same thing herself. She thought about the nurse with the strong arms who’d lifted her from the shower floor.

Jena looked over to the cell next to her. The woman who beat her up had a golden glow coming from her cell. Then Jena realized the light was coming from the woman herself.

Jena’s eyes got wide as the woman glowed brighter and brighter. For a moment, she thought the woman might explode.

Just then, the door burst open. The night nurse walked in and opened the woman’s cell. She tried to fight him off as he picked her up and threw her over his shoulder.

Jena watched as the door closed loudly behind them. What was happening to them?
