Drew paced back and forth inside his room. Kori was coming over today to work on the science project, and he couldn’t believe how nervous he was. He occasionally glanced out of the window.

Drew wanted her to be here before Grace came back from cheer practice. He knew that Grace would go completely crazy if she saw him working on a project with another girl. It was getting more challenging to keep his sister at bay every day. He’d been into the fooling around before, but ever since he acknowledged his feeling for Kori, being with Grace felt wrong.

Drew didn’t know how to feel. He’d been raised to know that his sister was his mate. Now, he didn’t want her like that anymore. She still had control over his body, but every time she touched him, he felt slight nausea creep into his stomach. Drew looked out of the window, and his heart stopped as he saw Kori jogging down the walkway to his house.

He turned around and almost fell over the box with the project. Then he, ran out of his room and down the stairs, almost slipping as he did. Then, he gained his composure and opened the door before Kori could knock. Drew let her in, and she stood in front of him awkwardly. He noticed her face was red again, but she seemed like she was in a good mood.

Drew set everything up in his room because he wanted to avoid his family as much as possible. Working at the dining room table would mean a barrage of questions from his mother, and when Grace came home, she would be a terror. Hopefully, he could sneak Kori in and out of his house without anyone knowing she was there.

Kori smiled as she said it and pushed the hair from her face. She was really pretty. He wasn’t sure he’d ever seen her smile at school, but he was happy she seemed comfortable with him here. Kori followed him quietly as they walked up to his room. When they got there, she immediately walked up to the bookcase.

Kori turned around and sat down on the floor. She began taking pieces out of the box their project was in.

Drew sat down beside her. He didn’t know anything about poverty. He thought about what his mom said the day before about how important it was to stay rich. As much as he didn’t want to be with Grace, he also didn’t want to be poor. He hated his life sometimes.

Drew waited for her to say more, but she didn’t. As she moved to grab the measuring tape, he caught a whiff of her soap. His brain was clouded with impure thoughts. He changed the subject.

Drew thought about that for a moment. Things must have been pretty bad in Brindleton for Kori if she preferred the treatment she was getting from the kids at school here.

They worked for a few minutes in silence. Drew began to sweat. She was going to hate him if things kept going down this road. He cleared his throat.

Drew couldn’t believe his luck. Grace’s outburst at dinner had given him two tickets.

He had planned on taking Anju, but this opportunity was too good to turn down. A night with him and Kori alone. He wouldn’t let it go anywhere. It was just a way to get to know her, and he wanted to help her make friends. At least that was what he told himself.

They worked on the project, chatting back and forth. It turns out, Kori was a ‘rock’ enthusiast in all forms of the word. She liked Rock climbing, rock collecting, and rock music, in no particular order

He realized talking to Kori was really easy. She wasn’t judgmental like most of his friends, and she seemed to be full of life and new ideas. And she was funny too! He’d found himself laughing more this afternoon than he had ever done with Grace in his entire life.

The time had flew by with Kori. He looked outside and noticed it was dark. Maybe she would let him walk her home. He suddenly thought about getting the courage to hold her hand.

Drew felt his face grow red. Grace was always running people away who got near him. He didn’t understand where it came from since he’d never had any girlfriends or anything like one. Drew watched as the happy expression washed away from Kori’s face. He’d never wanted to hurt his sister before this moment.

Kori stood up and walked out of the door. He heard her running down the stairs.

He jumped up and was already out of his room running after Kori while Grace called after him angrily. Kori was almost down the walkway before he reached her.

Kori stopped and turned around, looking surprised. Drew took a second to catch his breath. He was surprised by how fast she was. He looked into her sad brown eyes.

She looked down at her feet for a moment. He saw her face burn a deep scarlet before she walked past him toward her house.

Drew stood there for a few more minutes as he watched her walk away.
