The music from the club blared loudly behind Darrell Sanford as he opened the door for the next client, but he didn’t mind. Darrell loved his job almost more than he loved anything else in the world. Working at the Purple Palace in Willow Creek had got him out of his mother house before he was 20, and the last three years had been great.

He lived downtown in an apartment with his girlfriend pretty comfortably, but now she was seven months pregnant. Ever since she had made the announcement, he found himself with less and less cash. He needed to up his game so he could to afford to keep Tammy’s needs met and take care of a kid.

Darrell made his way into the club, so he could make sure everything was still calm. There were three stripper poles serving three different areas surrounded by couches and also lounge chairs. The women danced shirtless on the pole, sliding all the way to the top and dropping down to the floor before stopping inches from the ground to a shower of one’s and five’s.

The man he just let in tapped him on the shoulder.

“I heard you have X.” The blonde haired man whispered bluntly into his ear.

“Lets talk about it in one of the private booths.” Darrell said as he ushered the man down the hallway.

They entered a room with an orange glowing floor, so they could speak a little more privately. A blonde woman was dancing naked and getting money thrown at her. She smiled before she got down on all fours to pick up the money. Her breast rubbed the ground as she did it.

The man that Darrell had came in with was watching with wide eyed shock, but Darrell had seen it all before. He was much more interested in what this gentlemen wanted to buy than the girls.

“So, I do happen to sell a few things,” Darrell started watching someone throw another handful of money at the woman.

“I just need X, nothing fancy,” the man said.

“Do you have cash?” Darrell asked pointedly.

“Obviously, I have what you need,” the man said quickly, “ but do you have what I need?”

Darrell nodded and finally took him to a back hallway with a door leading to a closet.

“Okay,”

Darrell moved a few things out of the way until he found the small box hidden in the back. He opened it and took out one small, but heavy pill bottle with tagging on it. He finally opened it to make sure the pills were all there.

Selling drugs was never something Darrell wanted to do, but he had met a guy who could help him out and right now, there was no time to worry about the consequences. Not with a baby on the way.

He went back to the hall, and met the man. Darrell handed the man the pill bottle. He quickly took it from him and put it in his back pocket.

“Thanks man,” he said.

“No problem,” said Darrell, “If you ever need any again, you can just come back, okay?”

“Got it.” The man said as he walked out of the back exit.

Darrell headed back out to the main floor. He saw Stacy sitting down on a couch watching another girl dance. She had long blonde hair and a cute little face. Stacy had always been a really good friend to Darrell, especially when the club changed owners the year before. She had been an important part of keeping him around after the switch.

Stacy saw him and waved him over. He smiled and walked over and sat down.

“How’s the new business?” She asked.

“It’s a lot easier than I thought it would be.” Darrell said.

“Really?” Stacy asked, “Maybe I should start doing that, instead of doing this.”

Darrell laughed, “You could do both.”

“I’ll pass,” Stacy said, “It’s too dangerous for me.”

Darrell nodded.

“Does Tammy like the new pay?”

“She doesn’t really know yet,” Darrell said, “I haven’t given her any extra money yet, I think she’ll get upset.”

“You should give her the money and then tell her,” Stacy laughed.

“Do you think that will work.”

“It would work for me,” Stacy shrugged.

“Maybe I’ll give it a try” Darrell replied.

The rest of the evening was pretty uneventful. There was a few drunks that needed to be thrown out and he had to break up one fight, but as Saturday’s go, it wasn’t a bad one. Finally at 4 am, the club emptied out and Darrell headed home.

He walked into his apartment and closed the door behind him quietly. Darrell looked at the big green box he had picked up on the way home from Walmart. He put $5000 dollars in it and wrapped it with a bow. Maybe this would be a good way to let your live-in girlfriend know you’re a drug dealer.

He walked into the bedroom and saw Tammy sleepy soundly in bed. She had wild long curly black hair. Her usual curvy body had been replaced by a pregnant one, which Darrell didn’t mind much at all. Darrell thought about letting her sleep and telling her early in the morning, but he realized he wasn’t going to be able to wait any longer. He shook her gently awake.

“Mmmmm”

“Baby, I have a surprise for you.”

“You’re not supposed to wake a sleeping pregnant woman.”

“That’s a ‘sleeping baby’ not ‘pregnant woman”

Tammy murmured annoyed.

“Baby, it’s a surprise, I got you something.”

Tammy sat up. “You bought me something? What is it.”

Darrell stood up and held out the green box. Tammy stood up and put her hands out to receive the package. She opened it, and the saw all of the money inside. She looked at him in disbelief.

“Where did you get this?” She asked.

“I…I earned it.” Darrell said.

“How the hell did you earn this kind of money?” Tammy said, “Darrell, what did you do for this!?”

“Relax, it’s not that big of a deal, it’s just pills. Nothing serious.”

“NOTHING SERIOUS!” Tammy yelled. She sat down angrily on the bed.

Darrell sat down next to her. “I thought you might be happy. There’s at least 5000 dollars in there.”

“I can’t believe you’re selling drugs, Darrell!” Tammy said sadly, “You know how I feel about that after what happened to my dad.”

Tammy’s dad had O.D. the previous year of a heroin overdose.

“But this is nothing like that, baby, it’s just pills.”

“Just stop, Darrell,” Tammy said, “Tell me you’re gonna stop.”

“Oh come on, Tammy, really? That’s 5000 dollars for less than a week of work!” Darrell protested.

“Really Darrell? That’s more important than me? More important than you staying out of jail so you can meet your baby?” Tammy replied.

“A lot of guys deal, and never get caught.”Darrell said weakly.

“That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard,” Tammy said, “Do you hear yourself?”

“You said it yourself, Tammy,’ how the hell do I earn this kind of money’? We need this kind of money! Not club money, Not Retail money.” Darrell argued.

“At least my job is honest.” She said.

“It’s honestly not making us any money, and we need the funds.” Darrell said.

“Then get a second job” She said.

“Baby.”

“Look, I would, but I’m too far pregnant, no one will hire me. But you could just look at a few other options. I heard that McDonald’s is hiring.”

“Are you serious?” Darrell said shaking his head.

“No one goes to the one in Windenburg because of the cops, it would be an easy paycheck.”

Darrell sighed.

“Please, can you look into it,” Tammy said, “for me?”

Darrell was quiet for a moment.

“FINE.” He said, “I’ll apply at least.”

Tammy sighed and kissed him on the cheek.

“I love you,” She said.

“I love you too” He said back.

The next morning, Darrell woke up thinking about what he had promised Tammy. As much as he wanted to do what he said he would, he didn’t think it was really the smart thing. He got up and went to the bathroom for a shower.

Darrell couldn’t believe she had been that dismissive about it so quickly. They knew lots of people in the game, it didn’t make sense not to go and make some money for themselves. He turned on the water and began to take off his pajamas.

He didn’t know what he was going to do about his connect. Darrell had made the deal to sell, there was no way he could just calmly back out without any repercussions. He finished washing his back and got out of the shower.

Darrell decided he was going to at least go to the McDonald’s like he said he would. Maybe he could actually make a decent amount. He didn’t want to make Tammy mad this close to her due date. They had decided to wait to finding out what the baby’s gender was until it was born. Tammy had wanted to know, but Darrell got a real rush not knowing.

On his way out he noticed the mailbox was full. He opened it up and noticed a new box of pills from his supplier. Darrell swore under his breath. He had told him that he would make the drops off at the dive bar they met at, not his house. He knew this was going to be a problem. Darrell didn’t even want to think about what would’ve happened if Tammy had gotten there first.

He quickly took the box with him and headed out. He decided he would just leave them in his car for now, so Tammy wouldn’t find them. There was no way he would be able to hide this in the house anyway. He really would need to talk to his connect about it.

He drove down the block to the Windenburg McDonald’s. It looked like it had gone through a renovation, because it was much nicer than it had been the previous few months. Maybe this was why they were hiring. And it looked very busy. He was already regretting being there.

Darrell looked around the parking lot before getting out to make sure he didn’t see anyone he new. He saw the tiny play place in the back of the building. Soon that would be him one day, he thought, bringing his son or daughter to get chicken nuggets and play in the plastic ball pit. He wasn’t sure if he wanted a girl or a boy yet, but he knew one thing: He wanted to be a good dad.

After a few minutes of study, he decided the coast was clear, and walked quickly into the restaurant.

A black haired woman walked up to him and greeted him immediately. She was a full figured woman with a nice smile. He tried to look away from her huge breasts, but it was stretching out her work uniform so much he wondered how the buttons stayed closed.

“Hi can I help you?” She asked sweetly.

“Yes, I was wondering if I could get an application.” Darrell asked politely.

“Can you work evenings?” She asked.

“No, not right now, I have another job at night,” Darrell said.

“Oh, well we’re not really hiring for the morning shift right now.”

Darrell wanted to kiss her.

“But you can apply anyway, just in case if you want.” She asked.

Darrell hesitated.

“Sure,” He said.

“Great!” the girl said, “I’ll be right back!”

She walked to the back employee area. Darrell looked around while he waited. The place seemed to get more crowded as he stood there. Suddenly, he noticed someone he knew: a client.

“Hey,” Jeffery said quickly walking over.

Darrell plastered a fake smile.

“Hey, Jeff” Darrell said, “How can I help you, man?”

“I was just wondering if you had any….you know..”

Darrell looked around him, he quickly pulled a pill container from his pocket and handed it to Jeff.

“$480” Darrell said.

Jeff quickly handed him the money, and stood back in line. Darrell realized the girl he had been talking to had seen the entire exchange. He watched as she put the application down and grabbed her phone.

Darrell turned and walked out of the exit, only to be greeted by a police officer.

“CAUGHT YOU!” The officer said.

“I’m sorry?” Darrell said, attempting to look innocent.

“We’ve been looking for you for a while, and we knew that you’d slip up eventually. Dealing in the middle of a restaurant? We didn’t think it would be that easy.”

“I don’t think you have the right guy.”

“I’ll find out at the station.” The police officer pulled out his handcuffs. “Lets go.”

As Darrell got into the back of the cop car and the door shut in his face, he realized Tammy would never forgive him for this and he had lost Tammy forever.
